You do not have to have a technical background for this so come out and meet other people who are interested in creating a community wireless network! More about meetings * 1 comment Discussion list created Posted January 20th, 2007 by admin There is now a discussion list concerning the project overall. You can sign up here: http://lists.alacloud.net/mailman/listinfo/discuss Update: Forgot a symlink. Now the archive is functional, too. * 1 comment New Hardware Tested Posted January 11th, 2007 by admin Over the weekend some of us geeks got together to see how the Buffalo WHR-G54S would work with the firmware and with about three lines of command line magic (after remembering to actually turn the interface on...) the firmware flash was complete and no five minutes later the router was ready to use. * 2 comments * Read more First Meeting! Posted December 12th, 2006 by admin The first meeting for the Alacloud mesh network will be Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 6pm (the meeting had to be rescheduled, sorry for the inconvenience, Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 5pm. It will be held at the Civic Media Center, directions via Google Maps. No technical background is required! Everybody who is interested is welcome to attend. We will showcase how the network works with the equipment we already have and explain how we imagine this can become a grassroots community initiative. * 1 comment Some progress Posted December 3rd, 2006 by admin We now have the first node running the Freifunk Firmware and it is running quite nicely. Obligatory screenshots: The .3 in the image is the first hint of an attempt at structuring IP addresses. The most probable option will be registering an account at this page and choosing how large a block one wants to have allocated. There might be some presorting according to location (say zip code) but it should - at least up till 16 addresses for one user - be as automated as possible. * 1 comment Testing has begun Posted November 29th, 2006 by admin The arrival of a laptop with a busted screen marked the initial possibility of testing out the OLSR protocol under Linux without risking to brick the only router in my household with initial experiments. * Login or register to post comments * Read more Review of Strategy Meeting Posted November 20th, 2006 by admin Today we discussed the possible protocols and the items to be taken care of in the short-term. We decided on using the OLSR protocol, mainly because of its features and already large use in other meshing networks. The next goal will be evaluating alternatives to the generic Linksys access points - while still having easy install options similar to the freifunk firmare - to reduce the costs for a node as much as possible, as well as to avoid vendor lock-in. * 1 comment * Read more Strategy Meeting Posted November 17th, 2006 by admin There will be a strategy meeting on Sunday at 3.30pm at the Civic Media Center. Everybody interested is invited! No previous knowledge about the technology is required. * Login or register to post comments *Ping* Posted November 16th, 2006 by admin More to come soon.
